New Delhi: Delnaaz Irani in a recent interview revealed that she wants to take the “Neena Gupta route” and request producers and filmmakers to offer her projects. “Mai apke show kai through Neena Gupta wala route lena chah rahi huin ki meko cast kyu nahi kia on big screen. (Through your show I want to take the Neena Gupta route and reach out to producers and filmmakers and ask why they didn’t cast me on big screen.)” The actress, who played the role of Jaspreet aka Sweetu in Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta’s film Kal Ho Naa Ho, spoke to Siddharth Kannan and said that she feels there is a lot of “groupism and camps” in the film industry. Delnaaz added that due to casting directors and social media influencers, actors of her generation are “left behind”.
“I’m no Neena Gupta, but maybe someone will watch this and something will work out. There used to be a connect directly with the directors and producers. Satish Kaushik saw Kal Ho Naa Ho and called me to offer a similar part in Milenge Milenge. These days, that connection has been lost. It’s more of going and struggling with the casting directors. This whole middle structure that is there, that is something I still need to figure out. Aab toh aisa hai (It’s like), you have to go to their offices. I feel there’s a lot of groupism and camps. I cannot pinpoint what the problem is,” Delnaaz Irani told Siddharth Kannan.
Delnaaz Irani added, “My friends have told me that casting directors are not giving them work because they don’t have blue ticks on social media. These people have been a part of the industry for two decades, they’ve played leads. It hurts to see overnight superstars succeed, while people who’ve worked for decades in the industry are left behind.”
In 2017, Neena Gupta shared a post on her Instagram asking for work. The actress shared a beautiful picture of herself and wrote, “I live in Mumbai and working as a good actor looking for good parts to play.”
