Jacinda Ardern stepped into the role of New Zealand Prime Minister at the age of 37 in 2017. Enormously popular and successful in the role, she shocked the public with the news on January 19, 2023, that she will step down and will not be seeking re-election.

“I believe that leading a country is the most privileged job anyone could ever have but also one of the more challenging,” she said during a news conference. “You cannot and should not do it unless you have a full tank plus a bit in reserve for those unexpected challenges. I will not be seeking re-election. My term as Prime Minister will conclude no later than the 7th of February.”

She has gained worldwide attention for her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019 mosque attacks that left 51 dead, and her compassionate response after a volcanic eruption. She led one of the most successful responses to the pandemic in the world.
